Direction

In this alignment the dancer's body is facing one of the two front corners. Their extended leg is in a la seconde and is directed to the upstage corner (furthest away from audience). The same arm as the extended working leg is usually raised to a fifth position with the eyeline focussing downstage, away from the leg.

Example

a Grand Battement to écarté derrière using the right leg would have the dancer facing the front right corner, standing on their left leg, with their right leg stretching and lifting towards the back right corner. Their right arm would be raised in fifth position.
