Direction

In the écarté alignment the dancer's body is facing one of the two front corners of the imaginary 'box' which is framed around them. The working leg is extended downstage (closest to the audience) to a la seconde either on the floor (a terre) or off the floor (en l'air). The same arm as the working leg is usually raised to a fifth position and the eye focus is up toward the hand.

Example

a Grand Battement to écarté devant using the right leg would have the dancer facing the front left corner, standing on their left leg, with their right leg stretching and lifting towards the front right corner. Their right arm would be raised in fifth position.
